Put your assistant on your website

Your assistant already answers your phone. The same assistant can answer on your website: a small button visitors can talk to out loud, a chat window they can type in, or both. It knows the same things and it is allowed to do the same things, because it is the same assistant. You do not set it up twice.

Before you start

You need two things, and both are on one screen in your dashboard under SMART Voice → Put your assistant to work:

• Your code. One line. It already has your business in it, so there is nothing to fill in and nothing to change.
• Your website on the allowed list. Your widget only works on the websites you list. That is what stops somebody copying your code onto their own site and spending your minutes. If the list is empty, nothing appears anywhere, so add your web address before you do anything else.

WordPress

Do not paste it into your theme files. A theme update wipes them. Use a snippet plugin instead, which takes two minutes and survives updates.

1. Sign in to your WordPress admin, usually yoursite.com/wp-admin.
2. Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for WPCode, install it and click Activate. It is free.
3. A Code Snippets item appears in the left menu. Open it and choose Header & Footer.
4. Paste your code into the Footer box. Not the Header box.
5. Click Save Changes.

If your site is on WordPress.com rather than your own hosting, custom code needs the Business plan. Not sure which you have? If you can install plugins, you are fine.

Wix

Custom code lives in your Wix dashboard, not in the drag-and-drop editor.

1. Open your Wix dashboard and pick your site.
2. In the left menu go to Settings, scroll to the Advanced group, and click Custom Code.
3. Click + Add Custom Code.
4. Paste your code into the box and give it a name you will recognise later, like SMART Voice.
5. Under Add Code to Pages choose All pages.
6. Under Place Code in choose Body - end.
7. Click Apply, then publish your site. Without publishing, the change stays in the editor and nobody sees it.

Custom code needs a paid Wix plan with your own domain connected. Free Wix sites cannot do this at all - see the last section of this article for what to do instead.

Squarespace

1. Open your site and click Website in the left menu.
2. Scroll down to Website Tools, then Code Injection. On older sites it is Settings → Advanced → Code Injection.
3. Paste your code into the Footer box. Not the Header box.
4. Click Save.

Code Injection needs the Business plan or higher. On the Personal plan the menu item is not there.

Shopify

This works on every Shopify plan.

1. In your Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes.
2. On your current theme click the three dots, then Edit code.
3. In the file list open the Layout folder and click theme.liquid.
4. Scroll to the bottom and find the line that reads </body>.
5. Paste your code on the line immediately above it.
6. Click Save.

GoDaddy Website Builder

GoDaddy's Websites + Marketing builder has no place to add code to every page. You can add it one page at a time, which works but has to be repeated. For most businesses the page we host for you is the better answer.

1. Open your site in the GoDaddy editor and go to the page you want it on, usually your home page.
2. Click Add Section, search for HTML, and add it.
3. Paste your code into the Custom Code box.
4. Click Done, then Publish.

A hand-built website

1. Open the file for your page, usually index.html.
2. Find the line near the bottom that reads </body>.
3. Paste your code on the line above it, save, and upload it the way you normally do.
4. If your site has a shared footer file that every page includes, put it there once instead of on every page.

Then check it worked

Do not take our word for it and do not take your website builder's word for it. On the same screen in your dashboard, put your web address into Check it worked and we will load your page and tell you what we found. If something is wrong, it says which thing, and most of the time it can fix it for you. More about that here.

What if my website cannot take code?

Plenty cannot, and it is not your fault. The common ones are:

• Google Sites
• Wix on a free plan
• Squarespace on the Personal plan
• WordPress.com on the free or Personal plan
• Linktree and similar link pages
• A Facebook page used as a website
